Exponent Properties

Objectives:
  • Identify the properties of exponents
  • Simplify expressions containing exponents by using the properties of exponents

Vocabulary

Picture
What is an exponent?
An exponent tells us the number of times that a number is multiplied by itself.

What is a base?
A base tells us which number is being multiplied by itself for a certain amount of times.

What is exponential form?
Exponential form is a shortened way of writing a number as a base with an exponent for the number of times the base is multiplied by itself.

What is expanded form?

Expanded form writes out the repeated multiplication of the base by the number of times it is being multiplied itself.

What is standard form?
Standard form is the simplified solution after multiplying out all of the factors.

Before you learn about the properties of exponents, it is very important to pay close attention to the placement of negatives with parentheses.

For example,

These expressions are not equal.  Let's look at an example that has a given number for the base and exponent:

This means that you need to be very careful when simplifying powers that have a negative outside or inside of parentheses.

Properties of Exponents

The properties of exponents are used to simplify expressions containing exponents.  These properties are:
1.) Product rule
2.) Power rule
3.) Quotient rule
4.) Power of a product rule
5.) Power of a quotient rule
6.) Zero exponent rule
7.) Negative exponent rule
