Area of Triangles

Objectives:
  • Define area
  • Calculate the area of different types of triangles

What is area?
Area is the amount of space taken up by a flat shape. For example,

​It is always important to label the area with the correct "units" so that it is clear what type of measurement was used. Each measurement will be denoted with an exponent of "2" because area is in "square" units. For example,

We are going to look at the area of 3 different types of triangles:
A right triangle, an acute triangle, and an obtuse triangle.

Regardless of the type of triangle, all triangles have the same area. You will need two important pieces of information in order to calculate the area of triangles: (1) the base of the triangle and (2) the height of the triangle We can calculate the area of a triangle by using the formula below:
